An Introduction to Spirit Guides

Explore the truth about spirit teams, clear common misconceptions, and try 3 grounded exercises to connect with your guides.

Originally shared on November 29, 2025

I want to start the first edition of From Spirit, With Love by sharing the story of when I was 13 and first started learning about spirit guides. Within weeks, mine started leaving me coins.

They looked random to anyone else, a penny here, an arcade theater token there, even a tiny pressed medallion of the Virgin Mary. But to me? A lonely, undiagnosed AuDHD kid who never quite fit anywhere?

It felt like someone gently tapping my shoulder and saying: I see you. It was subtle but impossibly real.

That was the spark that pulled me into connection. It was the beginning of trusting a team I hadn’t even met yet and realizing they've been working, unsung, in the background of my life, way before I even knew they existed.

So… what is a Spirit Team?

Think of your spirit team as your personal support crew on the Other Side filled with guides, ancestors, angels, ascended masters, animals, star beings, and/or nature/elemental spirits.

Some of us have multiple of each on our team, some just have one or two beings in total. At least one guide will stay with you from your first breath until your very last one. Others might rotate in and out depending on what you're going through in life.

They have access to a broader view than we do in human form, but they’re not here to override your free will. They’re here to walk with you, not carry you.

Let’s do some myth busting

Myth: “Guides can read my mind.”

You are a sovereign being, your thoughts are your own and while they do have incredible power to shape your world, there is still a sense of privacy. If you feel that you hear your guides in your head, you might be experiencing telepathy or clairaudience, not necessarily mind reading. Think of it as communication instead of surveillance. Your inner world is your own.

Myth: “Guides are more powerful and I should obey them.”

All of our souls evolve at different rates along different routes, it doesn't make any of us better than the other. And while our guides do have access to wisdom and points of views that we don't as humans, you're still in charge of your life and your decisions. It's your choice whether you want to take on their guidance.

Myth: “If I feel alone, it means I’ve been abandoned.”

When we're deep in our pain, it's harder for us to feel connected to ourselves, our intuition, Spirit, and/or Source. Emotions like loneliness, sadness, and anger are dense, heavy emotions that weigh us down. But not feeling our guides doesn't mean that they're not there, distance isn't absence. They do so much without needing applause, their signs are subtle, steady, and quietly persistent and their presence stays even when the feeling wavers.

3 easy ways to open the door

  1. Speak or write to them:

Since they can't read your mind, this is the best way to communicate with them and show them you're open to their presence. Operating with specificity and gratitude will help things move along as well. For example you can try saying, thank you to my spirit guide for giving me a sign of your presence by showing me an orange bird. Then let it go and let the sign come to you in its own time

  2. Ask for their name:

Spirit guides aren't fussy about the names we give them, they're just glad to be acknowledged. You can try asking for their name and seeing what comes to you. A name might pop into your mind instantly or it might take a couple days before something feels right.

  3. Tell them about your day:

It may feel silly at first, since your guides are with you all the time, but it’s a relationship bridge. Sharing your highs and lows opens the channel wider than thinking ever could. Your guides are empathetic, patient, steady, and unshakably devoted to you, even when you’re figuring out how to use your voice.

Let’s keep the conversation going

If this sparked questions or curiosity, it can be helpful to take some time to reflect. Here are a few questions to help you get started:

  • What do you want to know about your team?

  • What signs have you already been noticing?

  • What feels confusing?
